First individual with mental illness appointed to Consent and Capacity Board

Toronto author Pat Capponi has been named to the Ontario provincial government’s Consent and Capacity Board.

With the appointment, Capponi has become the first individual living with mental illness named to the independent body responsible for hearings under the Mental Health Act and other statutes related to mental health. The board consists of 131 members including lawyers, psychiatrists and the general public.

Judge Ted Ormston, who supported Capponi’s appointment, chairs the Consent and Capacity Board and is also the chair of the Mental Health Commission of Canada’s Mental Health and the Law Advisory Committee.

Capponi is an author of five non-fiction books and two mysteries. She has served on several other board’s related to mental health and is a recipient of the Order of Ontario.
