About Phase 2

The MHCC believes that the Mental Health Strategy for Canada must be ambitious yet practical, useful and adaptable to differing realities of each jurisdiction and sector.  The success depends on those who have a direct responsibility for; the organization, funding and delivery of mental health services, supports, prevention and promotion strategies – activities all outside the mandate of the MHCC – and who must be persuaded to adopt the strategy developed by the Commission.

The process for Phase 2  is designed to provide many opportunities for and points of engagement with concerned citizens and stakeholder groups.

The HOW phase of developing a mental health strategy for Canada consists of four steps:

  1. Determine a comphrehensive list of options to address the issues that relate to   each of 18 topic areas;
  2. Determine priority strategic directions for the topic area;
  3. Develop priorities across the topic areas;
  4. Develop a comprehensive strategic plan.

In Step 2, each Topic Issues and Options paper, along with the proposed criteria for priority-setting, will be released for electronic consultation. A final paper that defines the priorities for action in this topic area will be produced and released to the public by June of 2011.

Step 3 will set priorities across all topic areas based on an extensive stakeholder and public consultation process to be held between June and December 2011. The final and 4th step will be to produce a concise, comprehensive plan by June 2012. More details on engage for the final steps of the strategy will be provided at a future date.

Taken together, the framework, the topic area papers and the comprehensive plan will make up the Mental Health Strategy.

In addition to this formal process, people and groups in Canada are welcome to share their views on any aspect of the development of a mental health strategy for Canada. You can send an email directly to the Strategy team at mhs@mentalhealthcommission.ca .
