The University of Alberta has been honoured by the Commission for promoting mental health literacy by teaching staff how to help people experiencing a mental health problem. This is the first time the MHCC has presented a Canadian university with an award related to Mental Health First Aid (MHFA). Since 2008, the U of A has embraced MHFA as a campus wide initiative as part of the Facing Facts program. To date, the university has trained over 250 staff members who deal directly with colleagues and students. The MHCC congratulates the U of A for their outstanding commitment and encourages all other post-secondary institutions to follow their lead by bringing MHFA training and its benefits to our family, friends, colleagues and communities across Canada.
