Welcome

Stigma is the biggest barrier preventing people from seeking help or treatment. It happens everywhere: at home, at school, at work, in the media. As part of its 10 year Anti-Stigma / Anti-Discrimination initiative, the Commission is targeting journalism students.  A pilot symposium was held with this target group at Mount Royal College on March 19 to highlight the impact the media can have on perpetuating stigma. Community service students, professionals and members of the public were also invited to attend.

The symposium included a number of presentations by experts from the field of media and mental health and people who have faced stigma at some point during their lives. The audience also discussed newspaper articles and real-life scenarios in groups.
